Shopify Product Description SEO: The Complete Checklist

Wrivo AI Team··4 min read

Most Shopify SEO checklists are written for websites in general and then lightly adapted for ecommerce. This one is specific to the product page — the fields, in the order worth fixing them, with a clear definition of "done" for each.

Work through it on your top 20 products first. Those pages already have traffic and revenue, so improvements show up in the data fastest and teach you what works before you scale the effort across the catalog.

1. SEO Title (Under 60 Characters)

The single highest-impact field, and the one most often left as a bare product name.

  • Lead with the term people actually search, not your internal SKU naming
  • Keep the brand name at the end, not the front, unless the brand is the search term
  • Stay under 60 characters or Google truncates it
  • Make every product's title distinct — templated titles compete with each other

Done when: you could hand the title to a stranger and they would know what the product is without seeing the page.

2. Meta Description (Under 155 Characters)

Not a ranking factor directly. Entirely a click-through factor — which is why leaving it blank costs real traffic on pages that already rank.

  • Give a reason to click that the title did not already give
  • Include a specific: price point, free shipping threshold, material, sizing
  • Never restate the title
  • Write to the limit rather than writing long and letting Google cut it

Done when: it answers "why this one and not the other nine results?"

3. On-Page Description

  • Answer the main buying question in the first two sentences
  • Include materials, dimensions, and use case as plain facts
  • Two-to-three sentence paragraphs, never a wall
  • Rewrite any manufacturer-supplied copy completely

Done when: someone could decide to buy without scrolling to reviews or asking a question in chat.

4. Benefit Bullets

  • Five is the sweet spot: enough to scan, not enough to skim past
  • Start each with an action verb
  • Describe outcomes, not just specs
  • Keep them similar in length so the block reads cleanly

5. Image Alt Text

Frequently skipped entirely, and it costs twice — accessibility and image search.

  • Describe what is actually in the image, factually
  • Under 125 characters
  • No keyword stuffing; "product image" and "IMG_4821" are equally useless
  • Every image on the page, not just the first

6. URL Handle

  • Short, readable, hyphenated
  • Contains the main term, nothing else
  • Never change it on a live page without setting a 301 redirect

That last point is where stores actually lose rankings. Changing a handle without a redirect turns an earning page into a 404.

7. Structured Data

Shopify themes usually output basic product schema automatically, but it is worth confirming it includes price, availability, and — if you have them — reviews. Google's Rich Results Test will show you exactly what your live page emits.

Every product page should be reachable from a collection page, and ideally referenced from at least one blog post or guide. Orphan product pages — reachable only through search or a direct link — get crawled less and rank worse.

9. AEO Readiness

The newest item on this list, and the one most checklists have not caught up to. A meaningful share of product research now happens inside AI assistants rather than a results page.

Practically: state facts plainly somewhere on the page, answer the obvious question early, and use clear headings. Copy written only in marketing language gives an answer engine nothing concrete to extract and cite.

Quick Audit Table

Field Common failure Fix time per product
SEO title Left as bare product name 2 min
Meta description Empty or duplicated 2 min
Description Manufacturer copy, unchanged 10 min
Bullets Missing entirely 5 min
Alt text Missing on all images 3 min
URL handle Changed with no redirect 1 min

Roughly 20 minutes per product done by hand. On a 300-product catalog that is 100 hours — which is precisely why most stores get through the first twenty and stop.

Doing This at Catalog Scale

Wrivo AI generates the title, meta description, description, bullets, and alt text together in one pass, runs across a whole collection at once, and includes a free SEO audit that flags which pages still have gaps. Free plan, unlimited products.

Frequently asked questions

How many products should I optimise first?
Start with the 20 products that already drive the most revenue or organic traffic. Improvements there compound immediately, and you learn what works before spending effort on the long tail of the catalog.
Do I need to optimise collection pages too?
Yes, and they are often more valuable than individual products. Collection pages target broader category terms with higher search volume, and most Shopify stores leave them with no description at all.
Will changing product descriptions hurt my existing rankings?
Improving thin or duplicate copy almost never hurts. The risk comes from changing URLs, not text. If you change a product handle, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL or you will lose whatever that page had earned.
