How to Write a Shopify Meta Description That Gets Clicks (With Examples)
Meta descriptions are one of the most under-optimized fields on a Shopify product page. Google doesn't use them as a ranking factor, but that misses the point — their job isn't to rank the page, it's to get the click once the page already ranks.
The most common mistake
Restating the product title. If your title is "Ceramic Pour-Over Coffee Dripper," a meta description that says "Buy the Ceramic Pour-Over Coffee Dripper today" wastes the entire opportunity. The searcher already saw the title one line above — repeating it gives them no new reason to click.
What actually earns the click
A meta description needs one of these: a benefit the title didn't mention, a specific detail that answers an unstated question (price, shipping, materials), or a light sense of urgency if it's genuinely true (limited stock, seasonal).
Weak: "High quality ceramic dripper for pour-over coffee lovers."
Better: "Brews café-quality coffee in under 4 minutes — no paper filters needed. Hand-glazed, dishwasher safe. Free shipping over $50."
The second version answers three questions a shopper actually has before they've even clicked.
Keep it under 155 characters
Google truncates meta descriptions that run long, usually around 155-160 characters depending on device. A cut-off sentence looks unfinished and can hurt the click-through rate more than a slightly shorter, complete one. Write for the limit, don't write and then trim.
Match search intent, not just keywords
A meta description stuffed with keywords but disconnected from what the searcher actually wants reads as spam and gets skipped. If someone is searching "best pour-over coffee dripper for beginners," a meta description that speaks to ease of use will outperform one that just repeats "pour-over coffee dripper" three times.
Every page needs its own
Duplicate meta descriptions across product pages are extremely common on Shopify stores that scaled quickly, and they're a quiet conversion leak — every product loses its chance to make a distinct case for the click. If you're not sure whether this is happening on your store, check a handful of product pages' source code for <meta name="description"> and see how many are identical or missing entirely.
The volume problem
Writing one great meta description takes five minutes. Writing 300 of them, each genuinely tailored to that specific product, is a different task entirely — which is usually why stores end up with duplicates or empty fields in the first place.
Wrivo AI generates a tailored meta description alongside every product's SEO title and description in a single pass, so every page gets its own instead of inheriting a generic default.
