SEO vs AEO vs GEO: A Complete Guide for Shopify Merchants

Wrivo AI Team··5 min read

Three acronyms now compete for the same budget: SEO, AEO, and GEO. Most explanations either treat them as interchangeable or overstate how different they are.

Here is what each actually means for a Shopify store, and how much of your effort each deserves.

The Short Version

SEO AEO GEO
Optimises for Ranking in results list Being the extracted answer Being cited in AI responses
Surface Google results page Snippets, voice, assistants ChatGPT, Perplexity, AI Overviews
Wins look like Position 1–3 Featured snippet, voice answer Named in a generated answer
Content shape Comprehensive, keyword-relevant Direct answers, Q&A structure Factual, extractable, citable
Still matters? Yes — the largest channel Yes Yes, and growing fastest

They share a foundation. The differences are mostly about how you write, not about separate technical projects.

SEO: Still the Biggest Channel

Search Engine Optimization is the familiar one — earning position in a ranked list of blue links. For ecommerce this means product pages that match search intent, collection pages targeting category terms, fast load times, clean site structure, and content depth across a subject.

Anyone telling you SEO is dead is selling something. Traditional search still drives the majority of ecommerce discovery. What has changed is that it is no longer the only surface worth optimising for.

AEO: Being the Answer, Not a Result

Answer Engine Optimization targets the moment a search engine or assistant answers the question directly instead of listing links: featured snippets, "people also ask" boxes, voice assistant responses.

What AEO rewards:

  • Direct answers to specific questions, placed immediately under a question-shaped heading
  • Question-format H2s that mirror how people actually phrase things
  • Concise, self-contained answers — 40 to 60 words is the typical snippet length
  • FAQ sections with real questions and real answers, marked up as FAQPage structured data
  • Tables and lists, which get extracted far more readily than prose

The practical shift: after each question-shaped heading, answer it in one or two sentences before elaborating.

GEO: Being Cited Inside AI Answers

Generative Engine Optimization is the newest and least settled. The goal is being referenced when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Google's AI Overviews for a recommendation.

This channel behaves differently. There is no ranking position and no click-through rate — you are either included in a synthesised answer or invisible. What appears to influence inclusion:

  • Plainly stated facts. Models extract "220gsm merino wool, machine washable" easily. They cannot extract anything usable from "premium comfort you'll love."
  • Clear entity association. Your brand should be unambiguously connected to what it does across your own site and elsewhere.
  • Structured data, which gives models a machine-readable version of your claims.
  • Being mentioned on sites models already trust. Third-party mentions matter more here than for traditional SEO.
  • Consistency. Contradictory information across your pages reduces confidence in all of it.

What Serves All Three

The overlap is large enough that most work is shared:

  1. Fast, crawlable pages. Foundation for everything.
  2. Accurate structured data. Feeds rich results, snippets, and AI extraction simultaneously.
  3. Real specificity. Materials, dimensions, and measurable facts serve rankings, snippets, and citations equally.
  4. Clear heading hierarchy. Helps every parser, human or otherwise.
  5. Answering the question early. Good for readers, snippets, and models alike.
  6. An llms.txt file and AI-crawler-friendly robots.txt. Cheap, specific to GEO, takes minutes.

Where They Genuinely Diverge

SEO alone rewards comprehensiveness — covering a topic thoroughly enough to be the best result.

AEO alone rewards compression — the tightest correct answer to a specific question.

GEO alone rewards verifiable factual density and third-party corroboration.

Those pull in slightly different directions, which is why the winning structure is: direct answer first (AEO), depth below it (SEO), stated as checkable facts throughout (GEO).

What a Shopify Store Should Actually Do

If you are starting from a normal store with normal SEO:

  1. Keep doing SEO. It is still the largest channel.
  2. Add a question-shaped H2 and a direct answer to your top content. Cheap, immediate AEO gain.
  3. Add FAQ sections with FAQPage schema to product and blog pages.
  4. Replace adjectives with measurements in product copy. Serves all three at once.
  5. Confirm AI crawlers are not blocked in robots.txt — some are opt-in and default to excluded.
  6. Add an llms.txt summarising what your store is and sells.

That is a week of work, not a strategic overhaul.

The Honest Caveat

GEO is genuinely new, and anyone claiming a proven playbook is guessing with confidence. The measurement tooling is immature and the systems change frequently.

What is not speculative: stores publishing specific, factual, well-structured content are better positioned for all three surfaces than stores publishing adjective-heavy marketing copy — and that was true before any of these acronyms existed.

Wrivo AI generates product and blog content structured for all three, with dedicated AEO and LLM SEO tooling on the Scale plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?
SEO optimises for ranking in a traditional list of search results. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) optimises for being the extracted answer in featured snippets, voice results, and AI assistants. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) optimises for being cited inside AI-generated responses from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews. They overlap heavily and share the same technical foundation.
Do I need to do all three?
You need one foundation and three lenses on it. Fast pages, clean structure, real content, and accurate structured data serve all three. The differences are mostly in how you write and format — direct answers early, plain factual statements, and clear headings serve AEO and GEO on top of standard SEO work.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. Traditional search still drives the majority of ecommerce discovery. GEO is an additional channel that is growing quickly, not a replacement. Treating it as a replacement means abandoning the larger channel for the smaller one.
