How to Start a Shopify Blog: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Wrivo AI Team··3 min read

Shopify has a built-in blog engine, so the technical setup isn't the hard part. The hard part is publishing something worth reading on a schedule you can actually keep. Here's how to do both.

Setting it up (the ten-minute part)

From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Blog Posts, and Shopify will create a default blog if you don't have one. From there:

  1. Rename it something specific. "News" is the default and it's forgettable — "Brewing Guides" or "Studio Notes" tells a visitor what to expect.
  2. Add it to your main navigation. A blog nobody can find from the homepage doesn't get read.
  3. Set a featured image size standard so your blog doesn't look inconsistent as you add posts — 1200x630px works well for most themes and doubles as a decent social share image.

Picking topics that actually bring traffic

Two kinds of posts pull their weight for a store:

  • Buying-intent posts — "how to choose X," "X vs Y," "best X for [use case]." These rank for searches from people close to purchasing.
  • Use-and-care posts — how to use, store, or maintain what you sell. These build trust with existing customers and often rank well because there's less competition than pure commercial content.

Skip generic "industry news" posts unless you have a genuine unique angle — they rarely rank and rarely get read.

A cadence you can actually sustain

Two well-targeted posts a month, published consistently, will outperform a burst of ten posts followed by six months of silence. A blog with a "last updated" date from a year ago actively signals the store may not be actively maintained — worse than not having a blog at all in some cases.

Structure every post the same way

  • A clear H1 that matches what someone would search
  • A direct answer or takeaway in the first two sentences — don't bury the point
  • H2 subheadings that break up the content and double as scannable takeaways
  • A natural mention of a relevant product or collection, not a hard sell

Where most merchants get stuck

Not the writing — the starting. Staring at a blank post editor with no draft is where blogging plans quietly die. Having something to react to and edit, instead of a blank page, is usually the difference between a blog that ships and one that doesn't.

Wrivo AI's blog writer drafts long-form SEO posts built around your actual catalog, with scheduling so posts publish on a cadence without you remembering to hit publish every time.
