How Often Should You Update Product Descriptions? A Practical Guide
"Set it and forget it" is the default approach to product descriptions on most Shopify stores — write it once at launch, never touch it again. That's usually a mistake, but the opposite extreme (rewriting everything on a fixed schedule regardless of need) wastes effort too. Here's a more useful way to think about it.
Signals that a description actually needs updating
- Search rankings have dropped or plateaued for a product that used to perform — often a sign competitors refreshed their content and yours is now comparatively thin.
- The product itself changed — new materials, updated sizing, a new use case you've discovered customers actually have — and the copy hasn't caught up.
- It was written before you had a defined brand voice, so it reads noticeably different from newer pages on the same site.
- Conversion rate on the page is meaningfully below similar products with comparable traffic — sometimes a page-speed or image issue, but often a copy problem worth ruling out first.
Signals that it's fine as-is
A description that's still ranking well and converting doesn't need a rewrite just because it's old. "Freshness" as a ranking signal matters more for time-sensitive content (news, trends) than for an evergreen product page — a well-written description from a year ago that's still performing doesn't need to be touched just to look active.
A realistic review cadence
Rather than rewriting the whole catalog on a schedule, review in tiers:
- Top-selling products — check quarterly. These matter most and small improvements compound.
- Everything else — check twice a year, or whenever the product itself changes.
- Seasonal or promotional products — refresh right before their season each year rather than leaving last year's copy live.
Don't confuse "updating" with "reinventing"
A refresh doesn't have to mean starting over. Often the fix is narrower than a full rewrite: tightening a meta description that's gotten too long, adding a benefit bullet for a use case customers keep asking about, or updating a tone that no longer matches the rest of the site. Full rewrites make sense after a major brand or product change — most of the time, a targeted edit gets more value for less effort.
The real obstacle is usually time, not judgment
Most merchants can tell when a description feels stale. The harder part is finding the time to actually go back and fix it across a catalog with hundreds of products, which is why "we'll get to it eventually" quietly becomes "we never did."
Wrivo AI makes a targeted refresh as fast as a first draft — regenerate a single field, adjust the tone, or run a collection through the bulk editor when it's time for a broader pass.
